I know I am crazy about vintage photos but my Aunt Dorothy just turned 90 and my cousin Tom just emailed out a slideshow. Included were these heartwarming photos of my great aunt and uncle who were very happily married (see their engagement photos here).

I love how classic these portraits are. If I were getting married today, I'd ask my photographer to try and recreate some candid shots like this (of course it helps that the people are simply adorable!). Happy Birthday, Aunt Dorothy!

buttercups

Have you ever gone back to visit your childhood home? My family moved a few times growing up, but there was one house I spent 11 years in. I recently went back to visit for the first time in 10 years. Mostly it was exactly the same and it was fun to see a new family (also with 5 kids!) living in and taking care of the house. There are some really pretty meadows behind the house that have luckily never been developed because they are protected wetlands. I was happy to see the buttercups are even more profuse now.

happy mother's day!

Happy Mother's Day! What a great day to celebrate all the amazing women in our lives. Here's my great-grandmother, Edith on her 18th birthday in Leeds, Yorkshire. Isn't she lovely?

ice skating party + happy winter weekend!

    

I could not be more smitten with this ice skating party that Abby alerted me too! I love winter picnics. Cyd from the Sweetest Occasion posted the party which was held in the backyard (in Maine) of Kate from Beautiful Days.  An ice skating pond in your backyard? This is the stuff that dreams are made of. My dreams anyways.

A few thoughts:

I am behind on posting projects and hope to have a special one to share with you on Monday. We will see.

Life seems to be flying by so quickly. Anyone else notice this? This list of the 5 most common regrets inspires me to savor the moments and to live in the present.

I made a pact to not complain for a week. Anyone want to join me? So far lovely things have opened up. Turns out they were right under my nose all the while.

have a cozy winter weekend!

This is a little preview of a project I was working on this week. I've been thinking a lot about how I want to just soak up this Christmas season but also not get too stressed. I am excited for baking, parties, and nesting. I don't really do the shopping thing (too many years in retail). However, I am making an exception to that rule for these two lovely events happening over the weekend here in Portland:

thanksgiving 2010

I love the simplicity of Thanksgiving. Is there anything better than good food shared with family + friends? I went to my parent's home this year where they were hosting around 30 people.

My favorite details:

My mom's table settings with her mother's china, garden herbs as centerpieces, and homemade painter's canvas table runners (she made 12 for $25!). Great idea if you like linen but want something more affordable.

Baked mash potatoes.

Cranberry, lemon and basil butter. (similar recipe here).

mt. adams backpacking trip

      
 

Just a few snapshots from my backpacking trip to Mt. Adams last weekend. I went with my dad and brother who are serious backpackers (they hiked the A.T. for 4 months a few years back). We cooked on tuna fish can stoves and slept under tarps! Mt. Adams was gorgeous! While some areas were dry and rugged, there were also fields of wild lupine and asters, bubbling brooks, mossy rocks, and an enchanting lake. I am not ready to let go of summer quite yet.

I am taking off early this week to go backpacking in the mountains. Unplugging from technology is just what I need about now to enjoy the last bit of summer. Be back next Monday! Have a great weekend!

have a lovely weekend...

This week got away from me so quickly. I can't tell you exactly where it went but I spent some time at Gearhart- By-the-Sea which is my very favorite Oregon coastal town. It's quaint and sleepy  and lacks the gluttonous feeling that seems so prevalent in a lot of the beachy towns.

I was also helping out the flower girls over at Ink & Peat and Quince with some weddings. Not much time was left for the computer! I'll be working this weekend getting ready for a photo shoot Monday but I will try to check in with some lovely posts very soon.

vintage wedding photo + weekend

I thought it would be fun to end Wedding Week with a photo of my parents on their wedding day in Calgary nearly 40 years ago (they celebrate their anniversary next month!). Pictured with them are my great-grandparents who I never met but who I think are simply adorable especially when I imagine them speaking in their British accents!
